CUPEST 2nd International Summit 2026 – Changsha, China – 10-11 June
Nigel had previously attended the first summit last year and thanks go to David Grecic (University of Lancashire – UoL) for organising the event which drew in Johannes Carl (Germany), Raymond Sum (Hong Kong), Efstathios Christodoulides (Cyprus) and Jose Amoroso (Portugal), to share the global research of PL related to the WHO and HEPA, developments of the Chinese Physical Literacy Association, UNESCO perspectives and PL and PL and Flying Discs. Keynotes were shared at the opening summit at Hunan Normal University, with teachers, lecturers and students. In the afternoon Nigel ran a practical session on how the Spectrum of Teaching Styles, developed by Mosston and Ashworth, can help promote physical literacy. This was thoroughly enjoyed by students and lecturers who took part. Other practical sessions included pickleball, AR – digital technology and PE, basketball, flying disc/ultimate frisbee, football and rugby. LINK Sport also provided a theory and practical opportunity on the second day.
It was very interesting to visit a local school (4000 students) and observe a table tennis lesson and then engage in discussions with the teachers from the school. We were also able to observe how technology was impacting not just in PE but throughout the school. Interestingly, the Chinese teachers indicated that they were worried about their students as they moved into older adulthood and the lack of engagement in physical activity. They were very open to the idea of considering different teaching styles in the future and how physical literacy may offer a way forward.
The intention is to consider how Hunan University, the University of Lancashire, LINK Sports and IPLA can work together on a project to develop materials to support teachers understanding of different teaching strategies and styles and curriculum planning.
