Published in September 2023, the Physical Literacy Consensus Statement for England marks a significant milestone in shaping a shared national understanding of physical literacy. Developed by a diverse expert panel of 60 academics and practitioners from health, education, early years, youth, sport, and physical activity sectors, and led by a research consortium from Liverpool John Moores University, the statement draws on a wide evidence base, including academic research, contributions from children and young people, two public consultations, and existing definitions. Building on more than three decades of work, including the pioneering research of Professor Margaret Whitehead, the statement offers a vital reference point for policymakers, organisations, and practitioners. This document unpacks the statement in greater depth, aiming to support those in national and local settings who wish to deepen their understanding of physical literacy and apply it in practice, ultimately helping individuals build a lifelong, positive relationship with movement and physical activity.
