Digital Media Policy

Our Photographic and Digital Images GuidelinesThe International Physical Literacy Association is committed to providing a safe environment for all children under the age of 18, and it is therefore committed to ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to protect children from the inappropriate or uninformed use of their images in resources and media publications, on the website, social media networks and elsewhere.

Any concerns regarding inappropriate, or intrusive photography should be reported immediately via the website contact page or if at an event to the event organiser. All reports will be recorded and investigated in the same manner as any other safeguarding or child protection concern.

The guidelines cover the following key areas:

  • the taking and/or publishing of photographic and recorded images of children
  • the use of photographic or recorded image equipment at IPLA events
  • Photographic or recorded images
  • This includes images or recorded images using a camera, digital camera, video recorder, mobile phone or Personal Digital Assistant device (PDA).

Everyone within the International Physical Literacy Association should have an understanding of the issues relating to taking and use of photographic and recorded images of children and our policy on this. Parents and children have a right to decide whether children’s images are to be taken, and how those images may be used.

Parents and children must provide written consent prior to the event for children’s images to be taken and used. There may be legitimate reasons for denying consent i.e. subject to legal restrictions. If no consent has been given for a child, then it is to be made known to the event organiser so any accredited users are aware and can avoid taking photographs of that particular child.

Care should be taken to ensure that images are not sexual or exploitative in nature, nor open to obvious misinterpretation and misuse. All images of children should be securely stored to ensure that access is restricted to approved personnel and avoid inappropriate use. In the case of images used on the website, particular care will be taken to ensure that no identifying details facilitate contact with a child by a potential abuser. Suspected inappropriate taking of photographic or recorded images should be challenged and reported. Visual content or captions must not lead to the identification of children.

All sports images must promote the positive safety aspects of the sport. When assessing the potential risks in the use of images of players, the most important factor is the potential for inappropriate use of images of children. Awareness of the risks, and taking appropriate steps, can reduce the potential for misuse of images.
